The lived experience of adopted people is ignored and adoption is still being promoted by powerful lobby groups.
In the 2022 financial year there were only 167 child adoptions in Australia – 151 local adoptions, and 16 intercountry adoptions. (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare)
Yet millions of dollars are still being spent every year on promoting and propping up this failed institution.
The cost of Adoption Departments dealing with future adoptions, and the maintenance of Adoption Acts in each State are a financial drain. This is on top of the costs to individuals and the government of dealing with the damage and fallout of existing adoptions.
As part of ARA’s call for a ROYAL COMMISSION into ADOPTION, we are calling for all the costs of adoption to be examined.
